Settlement Reached in Jameis Winston Lawsuit

$250,000 will go to Erica Kinsman, with the rest going to her attorneys, FSU said. Though Kinsman filed the complaint that triggered the investigation, her lawsuit and its settlement will have no bearing.

Kinsman's lawsuit was brought under a Title IX claim, which accused FSU of institutional indifference to her alleged assault.

FSU president John Thrasher said he was confident in the university's position had the case gone to trial but ultimately decided a prolonged legal action was not in the best interests of the school. "With all the economic demands we fact, at some point it doesn't make sense to continue even though we are convinced we would have prevailed (in court)". FSU will pay $950,000 to Erica Kinsman, an amount that includes lawyer fees, and will also make a five-year commitment to sexual assault awareness, prevention and training programs, USA Today reported.

Florida State admitted no liability in its handling of the case, according to USA Today's Rachel Axon.

The woman who accused former Florida State University quarterback Jameis Winston of rape says she hopes the federal investigation into her complaint will lead to more positive change across the country.

"I'll always be disappointed that I had to leave the school I dreamed of attending since I was little", Kinsman said in a statement.

The Title IX investigation by the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights is unaffected by the settlement.

Kinsman filed her lawsuit as Jane Doe, alleging that FSU "in concert with Tallahassee Police, took steps to ensure that Winston's [alleged] rape of plaintiff would not be investigated either by the university or law enforcement".

Thrasher said that, contrary to the rampant misinformation and speculation surrounding the case, FSU "remains committed to making our campus safe for all students and our school free of sexual harassment and sexual assault". The state's attorney announced Winston would not be charged with any crimes in December 2013 after a lengthy investigation.

She recently reiterated her allegations against Winston, now a starting quarterback for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, on camera in the acclaimed 2015 campus rape documentary "The Hunting Ground".

FSU has implemented several measures to enhance its response to sexual assaults since 2013, including the hiring of a full-time Title IX director.
