Lexus Signals Fuel Cell Future With Holographic Gesture Controls

Lexus has previewed the look and technology of its upcoming flagship LS saloon with the LF-FC concept, which has been revealed at the Tokyo motor show. No words on the power and performance figures of the vehicle have been announced so far but this will be officially unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. (1,410 mm) tall, roughly 5 ins. wider but 2 ins. When it arrives in a few years as the reborn LS, Lexus will once again try to close the perception gap between its full-size luxury cruiser and the best Germany has to offer.

The LF-FC is an impressively large sedan with LED headlights, Lexus' signature spindle grille and a curving body and cabin structure. At the rear, the striking new taillights adopt the same floating theme as the DRLs. The sporty 21-inch aluminum wheels with carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) rims, add an extra dose of flair to what is already a dynamically styled machine.

Inside, the fascia is split into two sections, top and bottom. The top conveys a sense of openness, allowing the driver to concentrate on the road ahead without feeling constrained. The front seats are also created to give off the illusion as if they were floating on air.

Interestingly, Lexus is showing off the concept powered by a fuel-cell system that sends power to the rear wheels, while also sending power to two in-wheel motors in the front, making it all-wheel drive. Its gadgetry includes a holographic interface for audio and temperature controls that works by waving a hand over the center console. It can precisely distribute torque to both front and rear wheels. It uses a hydrogen fuel cell stack at the rear of the vehicle, while the power control unit - that is, the car's brain - is mounted up front.

The Lexus LF-FC also features automated (not autonomous) driving assistance technology. Among them are elevated traffic environment recognition, prediction and a judgment function.

Lexus has pulled the wraps from the latest in its long-running "LF" concept series, this time in the form of the long and loaded LF-FC limousine.
