Atacama Desert, Driest Place on Earth, Blooms With Millions of Pink Flowers

But heavy rainfall has transformed the normally arid Atacama Desert into a sea of pink flowers. This beautification of the region was a result of a historic amount of rainfall past year.

El Nino is a weather phenomenon that is affecting the patterns of climate in every two to seven years gave a hard time this year with unusually high rainfall in the driest part of the world. While this doesn't seem like that much, 0.9 inches accounts for over 14 years' worth of rain in one day, according to the Washington Post. Based on previous weather reports, there hasn't been any rain in the Atacama Desert in the past 173 months. Moreover, thousands of other people lost their homes following this widespread destruction, according to global news agency EFE. The Atacama Desert has turned into a surprisingly lovely mauve carpet after millions of colored flower have begun to bloom.

Chile's National Tourism Service director told Daniel Diaz EFE said: "The Atacama region was punished, but also blessed by the phenomenon of a flourishing desert, something that happens only after the rains". "And the fact that it has happened twice in a same year has never been recorded in the country's history".

It's said the transformation occurs once every 5-7 years, although this riot of colour has been labelled "unprecedented".

However, they have taken advantage of the rainy conditions of this year, which has led to the most spectacular blooming in the past 18 years.

This year's El Nino is expected to be one of the strongest on record, already blamed for widespread flooding in South America. Also, it appears that the extent of this floral display is unprecedented.

It is a unique experience that surprised everyone and they would like to grab the opportunity to document the dynamics of the ecosystem, to determine how flowers live.
