Princeton To Consider Removing Woodrow Wilson Name From Campus

After 32 hours, the sit-in ended Thursday night with the university agreeing to look into Wilson's legacy.

The school now says it will consider removing a mural of Wilson, begin conversations about Wilson's legacy, and boost cultural competency training for faculty.

Wilson, an alumnus and president of the university who went on to become the 28th president of the United States, advocated for separation of races and opposed efforts by civil rights leaders to combat discrimination against black people.

Demonstration organizers from the have called on Princeton to remove Wilson's name and image from its public spaces, together with from the university's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and worldwide Affairs.

"We demand the university administration publicly acknowledge the racist legacy of Woodrow Wilson and how he impacted campus policy and culture", said the student protesters, cited by The Daily Caller.

Before making a decision on removing Wilson's name, Princeton's Board of Trustees plan to hear opinions from the campus community.

Students also called on the school to provide a dedicated space on campus for black students that is clearly marked.

Eisgruber held a meeting with students Thursday afternoon, but had earlier expressed his disagreement with a few of the group's demands, including the call to wipe Woodrow Wilson's name from campus. "We shouldn't hide that from our history, instead we should learn from it", Robinson said.

Last week, after students at Georgetown University staged a sit-in, the university met their demands to change the names of two buildings because of ties to slavery by the former presidents of the university.

Wilson served as Princeton's president prior to his election to national office-hence the tributes to him on campus-but the student protesters believe such references to him are unbecoming, insofar as the progressive-minded President was also a virulent racist and staunch segregationist.

Keylor of Boston University said Wilson had strong attributes and as well as flaws.

No disciplinary actions were taken against students. "There are no easy answers here", she said.

"We were able to assure them that their concerns would be raised and considered through appropriate processes", he said.

The final part of the petition asks that Princeton "maintains its commitment to free speech and condemns political correctness to the extent that it infringes upon those fundamental academic values".

Faculty members are now addressed as "head of the college".
