Arrest made in Chicago shooting death of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee

Prosecutors say Cory Morgan (left) and Kevin Edwards planned the heinous murder of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee. "We're going to go and destroy that gang now, and by the way, the rival gang too".

Chicago Police Superintendent Gary McCarthy identified shooting suspect Corey Morgan of Lansing, Ill, charging him with first degree murder.

He said that Morgan had at least two other accomplices.

One man is already in custody on an unrelated gun charge, . Police know that these three are involved with the killing of Lee, but just who pulled the trigger of the gun, who drove the auto and who acted as look-out, are the type of details that the police are working on. During a Friday bond hearing, the judge yelled and berated Morgan, calling him a predator and a danger to the community.

"I don't think that the amount of people that have been shot and killed in Chicago should have even gotten to where it is now", said Shanetta Hampton. He also expressed frustration with police, saying investigators seemed more interested in him than in finding who fatally shot Tyshawn. A Cook County judge denied bond for Corey Morgan, 27.

He was shot three times, with one bullet blowing off the top of the boy's thumb, suggesting he tried to shield himself from the gunfire. He was also grazed in the back, right forearm and right hand.

"There is nothing this court can do to save grandmas", Chiampas said.

"He was definitely lured from Dawes Park where he was playing basketball with some friends", McCarthy said. "A couple of them are non fatal shootings", Svilar said.

Mr McCarthy said locals had put aside fears of retribution to help tip off police about the crime.

"Tyshawn Lee was failed on many levels but at the end of the day our detectives were unrelenting in the pursuit of justice", he said.

Shooting deaths on the streets of Chicago, sadly, are nothing new.

South Side has seen a drastic rise in homicides in recent months, but Lee's death in particular has prickled the conscience of many in Chicago. Those numbers have ticked down, though the FBI's 2014 statistics showing 411 killings still outpaced other cities (such as NY with 333 and Los Angeles with 260) with higher populations.

Some areas of the city are worse than others.

The victim, Tyshawn Lee, was gunned down November 2 in what police say was a targeted gang shooting. He was shot multiple times in the head and back. Garry McCarthy held a news conference about the arrests.
