SAG Awards nominations see more diversity

Ensemble cast nominations included "Beasts of No Nation", "The Big Short", "Spotlight", "Straight Outta Compton" and "Trumbo".

The prize for supporting actor will be disputed between Christian Bale for The Big Short, Mark Rylance by the Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and young actor Jacob Tremblay for his role of a child in captivity in Room.

This year's Globes awarded a number of shows and stories that were about minorities: Matt Bomer won for HBO's aids drama the Normal Heart; Gina Rodriguez won for Jane The Virgin; and Transparent earned best TV series, musical or comedy, with its star Jeffrey Tambor taking home best actor.

Best actress nominees include Brie Larson for the movie "Room", Saoirse Ronan for the film "Brooklyn", Sarah Silverman for "I Smile Back", Mirren for "Woman in Gold", and Cate Blanchett for the film "Carol".

LOS ANGELES | "Trumbo", the movie about the 1947 Hollywood blacklist, led the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominations on Wednesday in a diverse field that hinted at likely Oscar contenders but snubbed presumed front-runners "The Martian" and new Jennifer Lawrence drama "Joy".

The 22nd annual SAG Awards will air January 30 on TBS and TNT.

The race will become clearer quickly when Golden Globe nominations are announced Thursday morning.

It's hard to know exactly what to make of Wednesday's Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations.

Bedford native Rooney Mara is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for the film "Carol".

Broadway veterans and theater stars abounded in this year's esteemed list of nominations.

The SAGs are often a solid early indication of Oscars hopes, since members of the acting guild represent some 20 percent of the roughly 6,000 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Downton Abbey, which has been hugely successful in the United States, was nominated for best drama ensemble, while Dame Maggie Smith was nominated for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series for her portrayal of the Dowager Countess of Grantham.

"It goes without saying that my performance is shared with the tremendous actors I work with", wrote Elba, congratulating his "Beasts" co-stars Abraham Attah and Kurt Egyiawan as well. On the television side, nods went to the stunt ensembles working on "The Blacklist", "Game of Thrones", "Homeland", " Marvel's Daredevil" and "The Walking Dead".
