5 things about hung jury in Freddie Gray case

Gray's death triggered protests, rioting and arson in the majority-black city of 620,000 people, and intensified a USA debate on police treatment of minorities. It followed the police killings of black men in cities including Ferguson, Missouri, and NY, which sparked the Black Lives Matter movement. He was accused of failing to get medical help for a critically wounded Mr. Gray and was charged with manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment. The charges against the other officers range from second-degree murder for the van's driver, to misconduct.

Jury notes in the Baltimore trial of a police officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray are causing a lot of courtroom commotion. He died a week later.

Prosecutors say Porter was criminally negligent for failing to buckle Gray into a seat belt and for not calling an ambulance when he indicated he needed medical aid.

Among the main issues in the trial: Porter says Gray asked to be taken to a hospital during the fourth stop, but the prosecution and the defense disagree about whether Gray as injured at that point, and about whether Porter's decision to not call a medic then was reasonable.

A Baltimore judge says there is a hung jury in the case of a police officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray. Before dismissing them, he said: "You have clearly been diligent".

He said he wanted to see if the jury broke down on racial lines. Seven jurors are black and five are white.

Jurors are in their third day of deliberations in the manslaughter trial of Officer William Porter.

The racially diverse jury of seven men and five women deliberated for about 15 hours over three days. "They chose the wrong defendant to try first". "I feel for the state and I feel for the family of Freddie Gray", Rose, who is black, said outside the courthouse.

"I'm not expecting our community to repeat April, but it is a bit of a kick in the chest", she said.

The other cops will not go on trial until next year.

William Porter, left, one of six Baltimore city police officers charged in connection to the death of Freddie Gray, arrives at a courthouse as jury deliberations continue in his trial, Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015, in Balti...

Within minutes of his mistrial ruling, a phalanx of uniformed officers surrounded the courthouse.

At least one activist was arrested in the immediate aftermath of the mistrial.

Gray's stepfather Richard Shipley read a statement regarding local unrest after the verdict. He urged the public to be "calm and patient, because we are confident there will be another trial with a different jury". He said Gray's family is not angry and that they want people to remain calm, understand what happened and keep their emotions in check.

"This case calls into question whether we can convict an officer given the current systems of accountability and is a reminder that we need to update the laws in ways that ensure accountability", Mckesson, a Baltimore native, continued.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said police are out on the streets to serve as peacekeepers.

Porter is the first of six officers charged in Gray's death.

Mr. Gray was black.

His attorneys had argued that he may have been unaware of department policy mandating that detainees be seat-belted, which was put into place shortly before Gray's arrest.
