Google is barely getting started in India — Sundar Pichai

Pichai that Google will invest heavily in not just enabling Internet access in the country but also in making sure that great products are developed in India.

The company will install 100 railway stations across the country with WiFi, by December 2016 with Mumbai Central station being the first to go live in January, Pichai said.

Under this program, the company is working closely with the Indian Railways and Railtel to launch RailWire Wi-Fi which will be providing free Wi-Fi at train stations.

Pichai will also meet President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to outline the ways Google is trying to connect those coming online for the first time in the country of more than 1.2 billion people.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Wednesday at a Google for India event in New Delhi in which he addressed developers and entrepreneurs.

In his first overseas visit after taking over as the chief of Google Inc, Sundar Pichai made a strong statement about the importance India will play in the overall strategy of the company in the future. "We will also build a huge new campus in Hyderabad". As part of the initiative which encourages women to get online, the program is focusing on expanding from pilot to cover almost three lakh Indian villages in the next three years. He also said the brand is working on making its products more accessible to those who rely on 2G networks for browsing the internet. He also pointed out how women are lagging behind in internet usage in India and underlined that it is important that sizeable women should have access to internet. Google also showed-off its new virtual keyboard that lets users type in 11 Indian languages.

He cited examples like , which serves up fast-loading results on mobile devices with slow connections; YouTube Offline, which lets you download videos to enjoy when you're not connected; and , which was built by two employees in Bangalore and lets people mark roads, landmarks and disaster-stricken areas on Google Maps. Jen Fitzpatrick, VP for Maps, Google said, "We are focused on keeping Maps relevant for India". The plans include a new campus in Hyderabad, Internet connectivity at 100 railway stations, as well as new features for . There will be more than 500 million users online in India by 2018. India has overtaken the United States as the second largest Internet market. The company has joined hands with 30 universities in India and the National Skill Development Corporation to get the project off the ground. The number of Android users in India will overtake the USA in 2016.
