LG to debut world's first augmented reality vacuum cleaner at CES

LG's latest HOM-BOT model adds a handy augmented-reality control mode to its existing high-tech features.

If robot vacuums get much smarter, they'll soon be telling us how best to clean the house rather than vice versa.

Instead of relying exclusively on lasers or built-in cameras to figure out where to clean, the mechanically-named HOM-BOT Turbo+ links up with a companion smartphone app for instructions. You'll be able to show to the robot which area of the house you'd like it to clean using the camera sensor on basically any smartphone, which is quite interesting and kind of intuitive. This sends photos of the inside of your home to your smartphone whenever it senses movement. The vacuum cleaner is equipped with augmented reality technology. The Canister is powered by LG's Smart Inverter Motor, which it said is 76 percent smaller, 65 percent lighter, and 24 percent more efficient on average than conventional vacuum motors.

The line-up includes the CordZero Canister along with the 2-in-1 CordZero handstick. The new handle enables the vacuum to be easily maneuvered in all directions without placing the weight of the vacuum hose on a user's wrist or back.

Augmented reality might not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about a vacuum cleaner, but with the way robot vacuum technology has been progressing, it's no wonder.

LG Electronics just announced it plans to launch its latest line-up CordZero at CES 2016.
