Southern California Hit By 4.4-Magnitude Earthquake

The magnitude-4.4 quake hit in foothills northwest of San Bernardino about 5:38 p.m.at a depth of about three miles, a report from the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Hours after the California earthquakes, another quake was felt in the Vancouver and Victoria area in British Colombia, Canada. The moderate quake struck at 11:39 p.m. local time Tuesday about 20 kilometres north of Victoria and was felt across much of southern British Columbia.

The Canadian agency said there were no reports of damage, adding that none would be expected.

There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries, however.

TransLink temporarily shut down the Millennium and Expo lines of the SkyTrain, but spokeswoman Anne Drennan said they, along with bus bridges, were reopened for one last run. Such a quake is capable of causing minor damage.

Authorities on the Island and in Vancouver posted messages on social media asking people not to call 911 about the quake unless there was an emergency.

After the 3.4 magnitude quake earlier this month, people from Helena's South Hills to the north Helena Valley reported what sounded like an explosion followed by shaking that knocked items off walls and shelves.
