Hezbollah attacks Israeli troops on Lebanon border

One report, quoting sources from south Lebanon, said an explosive device was detonated against an Israeli army vehicle.

Lebanese media are reporting on Monday that Israeli shells were fired at the Sheba Farms region near the intersection of the Syrian, Israeli, and Lebanese frontiers. In order to prevent infiltration during a recent strong storm along the Lebanese border with Israel, the IDF shelled Israeli territory along the demarcation line in the Shebaa Farms area for the past five days.

Hezbollah said the unit that carried out the bombing was named after Samir Kuntar, a high-profile figure in the group who was killed last month in Syria in an attack the militant group blamed on Israel.

The explosion occurred at about 3.15pm local time near the occupied Shebaa farms, with Israeli retaliatory fire hitting the vicinity of the Lebanese village of al-Wazzani. "We are in control of the incident", Almoz said in a statement. Israel is believed to be behind the killing, though Jerusalem did not confirm this. Hezbollah and Israel scuffle intermittently in the disputed border area between Lebanon and the Jewish state, and the powerful Shia group has in the past targeted army patrols in response to strikes against its members.

In 2006, Israel fought a war against Hezbollah that killed more than 1,200 people in Lebanon, mostly civilians, and some 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers.
