Russia raids on al Qaeda-run Syria prison kill at least 10

Civil defence member carrying an injured woman from a site hit by what activists said were airstrikes carried out by the Russian air force, in the rebel-controlled area of Maaret al-Numan town, in Idlib province, Syria, on Saturday.

The Observatory said that the warplanes fired four missiles that hit a court that includes a jail as well as a nearby road linking the court with a market.

Among the dead were five civilians, including a child.

It was not immediately clear if the strike was carried out by Syrian or Russian jets.United Nations envoy Staffan De Mistura met with Syrian officials, including Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem who told De Mistura the Syrian government is ready for negotiations later this month.

The Syrian Observatory said last week that more than 55,000 people, including nearly 30,000 civilians, have been killed in Syria during the year 2015 alone.

But Al-Nusra has formed an alliance - dubbed the Army of Conquest - with other rebel groups in Idlib, including the hardline Ahrar al-Sham.

Al-Nusra is one of the most powerful jihadist groups operating in war-torn Syria, saying it seeks to establish an Islamic state in Syrian territory. Aid will be sent simultaneously to two villages blockaded by rebels.

Tamam Mehrez of the Syrian Red Crescent had said "technically we are ready to begin distribution as early as Sunday, but if there are logistical issues it will be Monday at the latest".

Syria's conflict first erupted with anti-government demonstrations in March 2011 but has since morphed into a bloody war that has left more than 260,000 people dead.

The UN Security Council in December unanimously adopted a resolution endorsing a proposed peace plan to bring the regime and opposition together for talks slated to take place on January 25.
