Black Panther Movie Lands Director

Variety announced their decision later this afternoon.

He'll join the roster of Marvel Studios' "Phase Three" directors, including Thor: Ragnarok's Taika Waititi and Doctor Strange's Scott Derrickson.

You can say this much already: Marvel didn't skimp out on hiring a seriously skilled filmmaker to be their Black Panther director.

Black Panther was the first black superhero in mainstream American comics. In the source material Black Panther is the a prince of the African nation of Wakanda.

Prior to "Creed", the 29-year-old filmmaker first garnered buzz with the 2013 indie hit "Fruitvale Station", which also starred Jordan.

Chadwick Boseman is lined up to star as Black Panther, and will make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War in a few months time.

In tandem with the confirmation, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige released a statement acknowledging Coogler's previous work, in which he hails him as the "perfect director" to bring Black Panther to the big screen. Boseman will debut as the character in Marvel's forthcoming movie Captain America: Civil War which releases on 6 May 2016.

"Creed" has been a box office champ so far, grossing $103 million, with awards pundits seeing Oscar potential following Sylvester Stallone's win Sunday night at the Golden Globes for best supporting actor. So those types of films are etched into me because I have a familiarity with them.
