Microsoft reveals Toshiba dynaPad, a stunningly thin 12-inch Windows 10 tablet

The Japanese hardware maker says at 6.99mm (0.27 inches) thick and weighing in at 569 grams (1.25lb), the dynaPad is the thinnest and lightest 12-inch mobile notebook in the world.

The Toshiba dynaPad, that comes with a uber-thin keyboard dock and a high-precision stylus, is indeed a super-lightweight. Sadly, it's not magnetic like the Surface Pro 4's Surface Pen, but you can clip it to the side of the tablet when it's not in use, so hopefully it shouldn't get lost in your bag when you're on the move. And this is why the device will ship with a Wacom Active Electro-Static (AES) stylus, as it recognizes varying degrees (2,048, to be exact) of pen pressure. The company's TruNote software, for example - which integrates with Microsoft's Office suite - features an interface that can be adapted to left- or right-handed usage.

What's more, it features anti-fingerprint as well as anti-reflection coatings.

The core raison d'être of the Toshiba DynaPad is to replicate the "feeling" of handwriting with a traditional pen and paper.

The new Toshiba DynaPad as well as Microsoft's Surface Book, which debuted last week, reflect a shift in emphasis by manufacturers, and seem closer to giving users fully-functional laptops that happen to include serviceable tablets as well, said Dawson. With the keyboard attached and closed, the total thickness increases to 14.9mm, and the weight goes up to just under 1kg. "It makes for superior accuracy, allowing you to maintain your natural writing style as you take notes or draw doodles", Microsoft shares in their blog.

Now Toshiba has shown its hand in the form of a 12-inch Windows 10 tablet that is coming to the United Kingdom early next year.

Toshiba dynaPad will be available in the U.S.in the first quarter of 2016.

It is powered by a 1.44GHz Intel Atom processor paired with 4GB of RAM.

"Whether it be making a voice recording of a meeting, capturing an image of text or scribbling a simple handwritten note, the collection of applications will enable users to communicate their content via the likes of email and PowerPoint seamlessly - across multiple devices", said the firm. The OS powering the dynaPad is Microsoft Windows 10 with Continuum mode switching.
