Man killed in 5 Freeway rollover crash, ejected onto freeway sign

The auto rolled several times on the southbound 5 Freeway in LA at 7 a.m.

Highway patrol officers see crashes every day, but a wreck on a California highway Friday morning shocked them all. He was pronounced dead at the scene. According to officials, the man was not wearing a seatbelt.

The auto apparently hit a tractor-trailer then flipped, ejecting the man's body from the vehicle. The highway patrol received reports of a Ford Fiesta driving recklessly around 7 am local time.

The man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected when the auto collided with another auto and as the vehicle rolled over, the momentum flung the man 20 to 30 feet in the air onto the walkway of the freeway sign designating Colorado Boulevard. CHP shut down all lanes of the southbound 5 Freeway for almost 15 minutes as firefighters lowered the body, which was covered in a white sheet. It was not clear if any other vehicles were involved.

None of the officers in his office, however, can remember an instance where a victim was thrown into an overhead freeway sign.
