Lt. Joe Gliniewicz may have arranged 'sham marriage'

According to personnel files released Friday by Fox Lake, Illinois, officials, Lt. Joe Gliniewicz once allegedly threatened to kill a police dispatcher during a 2003 dispute.

His death sparked a massive manhunt because just before the shooting, he had radioed that he was chasing suspects into a wooded area.

An Illinois police officer who staged his suicide to look like he was murdered also attempted to hire a hitman, officials say.

The unusual details have continued to trickle out as investigators dig deeper.

Investigators say Gliniewicz arranged for his son, Donald "D.J".

The 52-year-old officer, an army veteran who went by the nickname "GI Joe", was hit by two bullets.

The sham marriage lasted for about a year according to ABC7, ending on December 29, 2014. Authorities say he planned to plant something on her to discredit her and then have her killed.

Fox Lake Police Officer Denise Sharpe said she began working under Gliniewicz in 2000. Investigators later connected that message with several small bags of cocaine police found in Gliniewicz's desk after his death in September.

Officers say Gliniewicz took a "five-figure sum" from the Explorers program over seven years, spending the money on loans, holidays, gym membership and porn. A police investigation found that he sent a text message saying, "If she gets ahold of the old checking account, I'm pretty well fucked".

"You have a 30-year police vet with unbelievable training he's gone through himself and he's been through", Detective Chris Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff's Department said.

In 2009, a group of police officers from the force complained to the mayor of Fox Lake that Gliniewicz had grabbed women's breasts at holiday parties, damaged part of the department's records management program, and been bounced from local bars for being intoxicated.

Marrin told reporters Thursday that she believed all her dealings with Gliniewicz were cordial and never had any sense that he was angry with her. She said she didn't learn about the plots against her until after Gliniewicz's death.

Melodie Gliniewicz helped her husband run the Fox Lake Police Explorer Post, which put young people interested in law enforcement careers through sophisticated training exercises. The village acknowledged in the lawsuit that Gliniewicz was suspended for 30 days for conduct unbecoming an officer but insisted the sexual conduct was consensual.

As the probe into Gliniewicz's death stretched on, suspicion grew that he had killed himself, but investigators publicly treated it as a homicide investigation until announcing Wednesday that he shot himself.

The marriage would have meant Daniel receiving thousands more dollars per month in military benefits, as he was supporting a family, as well as himself.

An attorney for the family declined to comment.

Those sentiments have now turned into a sense of betrayal. Many tributes have come down. A few signs praising "G.I".

G.I. Joe partially revealed the plot in a deleted text message to an unidentified woman to set up a meeting with a well-known gang member.
