New 20-euro note released

Today also marks the opening of the Euro Exhibition at the European Central Bank, in which the new €20 occupies a prominent position.

Have you seen the new €20?

Over 4.3 billion of the new notes have been produced, but if you have a ton of the old ones stuffed into your mattress for safekeeping, don't worry.

The bank updated its "new or fake" website on which people can find easy instructions on how to check if their banknotes are real.

Features include a portrait watermark of the Greek goddess Europa, raised lines along the sides of the note and a shiny emerald-colour number.

This new €20 note will be appearing in ATMs from tomorrow - and it looks very fancy.

The total net issuance of €20 notes in Ireland at the end of October was 21.7 million.

The €20 banknotes of the first series will remain legal tender and continue to circulate alongside the new notes, but they will be gradually withdrawn from circulation. New versions of the €50, €100, €200 and €500 notes will be issued over time.
