Beware: A hair tie around your wrist could possibly kill you!

She first had a bump and thought it was possibly a spider bite, but as it grew bigger she became more concerned.

But doctors have warned this habit could pose a serious risk to health after a woman suffered a severe infection.

They prescribed her antibiotics but they didn't work so she ended up in the Accident and Emergency room where she needed to be operated on.

We're gonna go ahead and take a wild guess that if you've got hair long enough to tie up you've probably got a spare hair band or two in your bag or wrapped around your wrist right now.

Audree Kopp, from Kentucky, had to undergo surgery after developing an antibiotic-resistant abscess on her wrist.

Medical officials believe that the infection began with a small cut and bacteria being harboured on the hairband was able to transfer into the body.

"I was admitted to the ER, transported by ambulance to another hospital for emergency surgery.my white cell count was thru the roof, and I was lucky to have NOT had sepsis [sic]", she of the type of bodily response which can be life-threatening. In the middle of the hustle and bustle of the move, she noticed that a lump was growing on her wrist. The accessory may have gotten under the skin through her pores and hair follicles, thus resulting in an infection.

Dr Amit Gupta, who drained the abscess, said: "You can't put all these hair-ties around the wrist particularly because it can cause problems with the skin, it can cause infection". She further said that the situation can get worse, explaining that the moment the bacteria reaches the bloodstream, individuals may go into coma.

Kopp says she will be using smooth hairbands that are easy to clean, rather than textured or glitter ones, from now on.
