A's Close To Signing Henderson Alvarez

In 2014, Alvarez had a stellar season with Miami.

Miami Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez wears a Venezuelan headband before the start of a baseball game against the Oakland Athletics, Saturday, June 28, 2014 in Miami.

The pitcher had been with the Marlins past year, but became a free agent in December because of his shoulder issues. Jon Heyman of CBSSports was the first to report the deal. However, Alvarez posted on his Instagram account that he was going to the A's.

Alavarez, who will turn 26 in April, made just four starts with the Marlins in 2015, going 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA and 1.567 WHIP before being shut down with a shoulder injury and eventual surgery. He is considered likely to miss the first month of the season and could be out for even more time, which is why the Marlins chose to non-tender him earlier in the month.

Alvarez is a sinkerball pitcher who doesn't strike-out a lot of batters but works quickly and deep into games.

Alvarez is the latest rotation addition for an Athletics' team that already added Rich Hill this winter and also has Jesse Hahn, Kendall Graveman, Chris Bassitt and Aaron Brooks in the mix for rotation spots.

In his career, he has a record of 27-34 with an ERA of 3.80. Although Kazmir lives in Houston, he's listening to other teams including Oakland.

Traded from Toronto to Miami in 2013, Alvarez no-hit the Tigers on the final day of that season. Parker hasn't pitched in the big leagues in two years following Tommy John surgery.
