CES 2016: Sony says PlayStation VR will have over 100 titles

Beyond pricey offerings from Sony and Oculus, "light mobile VR" headsets - such as Google Cardboard - will grab significant share.

It seems that Sony's aggressive strategy has finally paid off, as it announced at CES 2016 that it has sold 5.7 million PlayStation 4 units during the 2015 holiday season. The market will be driven by low-price VR headsets that can be easily assembled and attached to mobile devices.

"Consumers will use their smartphones to first explore virtual reality, before committing to the more expensive platforms".

The Gear VR is also far more affordable than Oculus Rift, costing only $159 compared to $600 of the former.

"It's all about making a better gameplay experience which sets us aside from everyone else".

Now available in the United Kingdom, the Oculus Rift has a price tag of £499 with two games in it: EVE Valkyrie and Lucky's Tale. Staff members chime in on what price will peg for PlayStation VR, and also, what the "sweet spot" is to make it an insta-buy for consumers/gamers. I realize there's been a lot of R&D spent to bring the commercial version to market, and there's some price insensitivity among the hardcore VR fan base, but I was expecting perhaps $500 for the basic bundle.

The Oculus Rift has become a reality for consumers, which means there's one more highly anticipated virtual reality headset shrouded in mystery. Although there is no time frame for a release just yet as well a lack of information on pricing, PlayStation VR seems to have briefly shown up on Amazon Canada for a price well over a thousand.

In an interview with the BBC, CEO Kaz Hirai added that the 200 developers who had already signed up to the company's PlayStation VR Program were "a testament to the kind of support that we're getting from the content creation community on PlayStation VR".
