Flipkart Sets up its largest warehouse at Hyderabad

Flipkart Ltd, the country's largest e-commerce company, is making its biggest investment push by far by investing about $2.5 billion over the next few years to establish a country-wide network of back-end infrastructure as it fortifies its position in the rapidly growing e-commerce market.

Flipkart's new facility is expected to open up over 17,000 direct and indirect job opportunities in the area.

Launched in 2007, Flipkart is still not profitable but Bansal is confident of the company reaching that zone in 2 to 3 years. Spread over 220,000 square feet, the facility has 5.89 lakh cubic feet of storage space.

The company is gearing up to establish 80 to 100 more such centres in the country in next four to five years by investing $500 million. With a capacity to process 120,000 units a day, it is the company's first automated fulfilment centre. "The centre offers capabilities that have been created to provide easy access to e-commerce services for sellers, while providing faster and seamless services to customers", added the company. The centre has automated sorters with the ability to separate shipments based on pincodes.

The South contributes 40 per cent to its overall business.

Mr. Ramamohan Naidu requested Mr. Bansal to consider opening another such FC in Andhra Pradesh saying he would help facilitate the company with whatever assistance is required from the government.

This state-of-the-art facility is equipped with a conveyor belt that is a kilometer long and saves motion wastage by 75 percent. Flipkart, which had a billion dollar funding last year, invested $100 million in setting up warehouses over last eight years. With 50 million products, Flipkart has 45 million registered users logging over 10 million daily shipments.
