Sri Lanka vs. West Indies, 1st ODI

Andre Russell, the hard-hitting allrounder, scored 89 off 54 balls, and Carlos Brathwaite (113 off 58 deliveries) put on a 193-run partnership for the eighth wicket to rescue the visitors from a tricky position and secure a 43-run victory in Colombo via the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Sri Lanka's captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and sent the West Indies to bat in the first one-day global in Colombo on Sunday.

Sri Lanka have had an abysmal year in ODIs.

The hosts swept the recent Test series 2-0 and sit above their opponents in the current ODI rankings published by the worldwide Cricket Council (ICC).

During the World Cup campaign, West Indies had regularly taken wickets with the new ball but allowed the advantage to slip as opposition batsmen flourished.

The two sides have met in twenty ODIs since the turn of the millennium with Sri Lanka winning 12 of those matches. Simmons will take the team to Australia for three Test matches starting in early December. Sachithra Senanayake has been a diminished bowler since remodelling his action previous year, Ajantha Mendis has often been exposed by powerful hitting, and legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay is yet to play an ODI.

Teams news: Sri Lanka may try to shoehorn batting allrounder Shehan Jayasuriya somewhere in the top seven - most likely at No.6, pushing Milinda Siriwardene to No.7.

Spinner Sunil Narine's return to worldwide cricket after a 14-month hiatus could help solve West Indies' lack of penetration in the middle overs, captain Jason Holder said.

Meanwhile, Devendra Bishoo, the legspinner, who has enjoyed a successful return to global cricket so far, will join Narine in the spin department.

West Indies have not played a 50-over match since going out of the tournament at the hands of New Zealand at the quarter-final stage, meaning Narine has had to wait to make his global comeback.

Andre Russell is glad to have Sunil Narine and Ravi Rampaul part of West Indies' squad against Sri Lanka.

All rounder Carlos Brathwaite, who smashed a century in a tour game against Sri Lanka Board President XI on October 2, said he would continue to play with aggressive approach.
