Braves trade Miller to Diamondbacks for package including Enciarte, Swanson

The Braves and Diamondbacks just announced that the deal everyone was talking about last night is now official.

Rarely are two things as clear as they were by Wednesday - when the Diamondbacks' acquisition of right-hander Shelby Miller for a package that included the first pick in the 2015 draft, shortstop Dansby Swanson - trumped all else as the talk of the winter meetings.

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Shelby Miller (17) pitches against the New York Mets during the second inning at Citi Field. It's not unreasonable to think that, if he hits, Swanson could in the big leagues in time for the Braves to open their new suburban stadium in Cobb County in 2017. Dbacks fans think they just unloaded Todd Van Poppel.

Jenkins was the Braves' minor league pitcher of the year and could make his big-league debut during the 2016 season. That 110/17 strikeout/walk ratio suggests to me that pitchers will continue to exploit his aggressive approach and that his raw power potential may not materialize.

I still have issues with this team, at least in the short-term. But that ship has sailed and the rebuild has always been underway, so any more complaining about that says more about me than it does about the Braves.

Probably the biggest trade that Hart has made in Atlanta was the one that sent Heyward to the St. Louis Cardinals for Shelby Miller. He helped his team win the College World Series his sophomore year and make it back to the finals his junior year, where they lost to Virginia. Dansby Swanson was ranked as the top prospect despite being selected in the 2015 draft. And that's just for starters.

They could have kept the money and they could have kept the prospects, and then nobody would have called the Arizona Diamondbacks insane. The Braves also will receive outfielder Ender Inciarte and pitching prospect Aaron Blair, while the Diamondbacks will also receive a minor-league player, according to Stark. When you've got young players ready to go, ready to rock, that are Braves down to their core, that have had a chance to come (through the system), and you've got money.

The Diamondbacks' side of this is understandable in a certain context.

While some of the mentioned players would have cost Arizona a draft pick, that's undoubtedly less costly than what they gave up for Miller.

Miller will join the Diamondbacks and slot in as their #2 starter behind ace Zack Greinke. Or even in April. They don't have a prospect as good as Swanson, and they might not have one as good as Blair. After breaking the bank to sign starting pitcher Zack Greinke to a record deal worth $206.5 million in total and over $34 million annually for the next six years, the D-Backs made another high profile move in what was the first true blockbuster trade of this offseason. Inciarte 38 extra base hits in 2015, showing that he has a bit more pop than Maybin as well, and can stabilize the Braves' outfield. It puts us in a position to get better as a team, but we weren't complete.

All of which makes one wonder if the Dbacks have several more moves up their sleeve. They were really in on who this player (Swanson) was because he was from our area and they knew who this player was, where he was from and what he could do. Dave Stewart is carrying it out.
