Google to invest more in India

The project will be live at Mumbai Central (station) by January and is being done in partnership with RailTel, . Google expects more than 500 million users to be online in India by 2018.

The Google CEO will also meet resident Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Speaking his mind, the 43-year old CEO "If I wouldn't have become the CEO of Google, I would still be building software products".

"Google is looking at hiring people for Bangalore and Hyderabad..." Pichai minced no words about this and said that India will have more Android users in 2016 than even the US. As part of the initiative which encourages women to get online, the program is focusing on expanding from pilot to cover almost three lakh Indian villages in the next three years.

The tech giant also unveiled two new projects to boost its penetration into India's vast rural and semi-urban hinterland.

Talking about the recent startup wave in the country, an upbeat Pichai said: "I have always been waiting for this change in India".

Google CEO Sunder Pichai has announced the company plans to expand its Hyderabad campus and bring Wi-Fi connectivity to over 100 railway stations across India.

India will have the largest user base for devices by next year, overtaking the United States, though just a quarter of the Indian telecom user base has smartphones, Pichai said... India ranks second, after the U.S.in terms of search volumes from mobile phones. India is one of the top five countries that has the most people using Offline Maps. A year ago when I visited India, I really felt that startup culture had really taken hold here. Among them, the first one is "New Google campus in Hyderabad", as it planning to recruit more people.

"It makes a lot of sense to invest in India as what we build here will have global usage", Pichai said.

The India-born CEO said at the event that he hopes to give so much more to the country as it has been generous to him and the whole team at Google.

Krishna Kumar pointed that if the system developed is robust enough then it will certainly help the government's Digital India. "But in 2020, more than 30 percent of mobile internet will still be from 2G connections".
