Charges filed in fatal Alabama street race crash

The latest on the Alabama street race that killed three and injured nine.

The crash occurred on Greene County 231 approximately two miles north of Eutaw.

Three people were killed and nine others injured in the two-vehicle accident, which troopers blamed on street racing.

Thirty-year-old Rodney Hutton, 22-year-old Jalesa Kiara Merritt, and 3-year-old Jhayden Pippen, all of Eutaw, were killed. Authorities transported Hutton and Pippen to Greene County Hospital where they were pronounced dead. A second driver was taken into custody in Huntsville but his identity has not yet been released. Wedgeworth was taken into custody shortly before midnight Saturday, after he turned himself in to Alabama State Troopers at a local hospital. She also said it probably hurts Wedgeworth too because most of the affected people are his friends and are familiar to them.

Greene County is in one of Alabama's poorest regions, known as the Black Belt, and had the fourth highest unemployment rate of 67 Alabama counties at 10.1 percent in November, according to the Alabama Department of Labor. No arrests have been made.

Alabama State Troopers have charged both Maurice Devonte Wedgeworth, 22, of Eutaw and Clyde Lawson, 27, of Harvest with three counts of Manslaughter and one count of Leaving the Scene of an Accident with injuries in connection with the recent traffic crash in Greene County.
