Golden Globes: 5 lohud moments we can't wait to see

Ricky Gervais, the acerbic British comic behind "The Office", "Derek", "Extras" and three outrageously sharp-tongued stints hosting the Golden Globe Awards, has been the stuff of controversy ever since his return to the ceremony (Sunday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m. on NBC/4) was announced in October.

Hollywood awards season is officially upon us, and to kick things off, the 73rd Golden Globe Awards will be held this coming Sunday, January 10th.

The Office star hosted the Golden Globes from 2010 to 2012, each time getting drunk on stage, offending its stars and generally ruffling Hollywood's feathers. His achievements as a filmmaker and a performer have earned him a total of seven nominations across the years. They are to the Oscar what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton... a bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought - allegedly. The award is presented each year to an individual who has contributed outstanding work to the world of entertainment. In the past, he has skewered everyone from Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey Jr.to Kim Kardashian.

The three-hour ceremony will is the first for this year's awards season, according to NBC. I was editing one film I made this year and I was about to film another one, and I just thought, I just haven't got the time, but they said all the right things.

"I don't mean they threatened to kill me". They tell the Emmys, 'Here are the shows to look at.' That's their role. I'm quite looking forward to it now though. This broadens the reach of the awards and also makes the Globes more mainstream and audience-friendly. He told the Hollywood Reporter, "I've never understood the controversy around the Golden Globes". I'd rather people laugh than gasp. "Spotlight", about The Boston Globe's probe into sex abuse by Catholic priests, is the likely frontrunner for best drama while Wall Street misdeeds movie "The Big Short" could win best comedy, O'Neil said.

While hugely popular, Poehler and Fey shocked the A-list crowd in 2015 after making jokes about Bill Cosby's sexual assault claims and participating in Margaret Cho's North Korean dictator skit. She is up against her "Carol" costar Cate Blanchett, who plays her married lover. The competition is stiff - it's up against "Empire" and "Game of Thrones" in the big category - but the Globes love going out on a limb for new shows, and "Mr. Robot" is an underdog story worth getting behind.
