South Carolina police officer fired for body-slamming girl

"Unfortunately, that line is blurry, and it leads a lot of people to believe that if you don't do exactly what a law enforcement officer asks, that he gets to brutalize you and beat you up in front of other people - and that's not true".

Unfortunately, the narrative about the teen being "disruptive" and "violent" towards the officer has already begun, with multiple media outlets noting that it was not clear what happened before the video started.

Several students filmed Fields flipping the girl over in her chair and dragging her across the floor. Lott said one video shows the student hitting Fields but ultimately, the sheriff's deputy lost control.

At this time, Fields remains suspended without pay.

Rutherford said that lawmakers must tighten up restrictions on use of force by school resources officers such as Fields - who students say was "known for slamming" pregnant women and teenage girls to the ground. "They're doing a good job, yet we can't get the cameras to cover these things".

Lott still faces anger from many in the community, as he still intends to pursue charges against both the student and another girl who stepped up to defend her classmate.

Email, phone and text messages for Fields were not returned. "That is something we are going to talk to the school district about", he said. "She was not allowing the teacher to teach, she was not allowing the students to learn".

Our future excellence as a nation depends greatly on our current capacity to raise the next generation of trailblazers-and if this latest assault on black children is any indication-we won't need shades, for our bright future-we'll need a hope and a prayer. And I'll be one of the first ones to stand here and tell you that it's been abused in the past.

The student, whose name has yet to be released, has obtained South Carolina House Minority Leader Todd Rutherford to represent her.

"To my knowledge, she wasn't injured whatsoever", Lott said. Lt. Curtis Wilson told The Associated Press in an email to "keep in mind this is not a race issue".

Excessive force claims focus on whether the officer's actions were reasonable or not considering the surrounding facts and circumstances. "To be thrown out of her seat as she was thrown, and dumped on the floor..."

The ACLU of South Carolina has called it a law that discriminates against students of color.

"Our students were really, really messed up", she said. He said there's a third video that showed the student striking and punching at the officer.

The internal investigation included interviews with the teacher and the administrator who requested Fields remove the female student. The student was wrong in what she did.

The second student, Niya Kenny, told WLTX-TV that she felt she had to say something.

On Wednesday, Lott-who also said the incident has given him heartburn-announced at a press conference that Deputy Fields has been fired. He said the deputies have to receive more training and certification.

When deputies don't, he said: "Citizens should use their cellphone and police the police".

"Kids are not criminals, by the way". Regardless of whether a few teenagers want to be nurtured or not, our role as the adults in the room is to guide them into who they aspire to be, not cut short their aspiration on life before they've even reached senior year.

Nearly 31,000 "school resource officers" or other law enforcement officers are stationed at USA public schools, with another 13,060 sworn law enforcement officers spending at least part of their time at schools, according to U.S. Department of Education data.

The State newspaper reports: "Fields has had three lawsuits filed against him as a deputy".
