Crevasse opens up in Big Horn Mountains prompting interest on social media

Just in time for the ancient and unspeakable ones to rise from their underground caverns on Halloween, KTVQ reports a large crack has mysteriously appeared in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains.

Seth Wittke of the Wyoming Geological Survey says the formation is likely the result of a slow-moving landslide.

While impressive, the crack is not a sign that the nearby Yellowstone caldera is about to erupt, nor is it "mysterious", as numerous posts on Facebook and Twitter have suggested.

The split is 750 yards long and 50 yards wide, according to Grind TV.

For better, worse, or reasons unknown, the ground sometimes opens up and swallows whatever happens to be above it. These events usually happen in the form on a sinkhole, but a different sort of fissure has been discovered in Wyoming.

SNS, meanwhile, said that an engineer was allowed to see the crack, offering a similarly rational explanation for the massive opening. Apparently, a wet spring lubricated across a cap rock.

Wittke said geological officials have not visited the site of the crack but have seen photos.

Andersen said "there is a few speculation" that the chasm was triggered by "an early, wet, spring and summer".

'Then, a small spring on either side caused the bottom to slide out.

"It is not uncommon to have slides like that", she said.

'He estimated 15 to 20 million yards of movement.

The group SNS Outfitter and Guides posted another picture on its Facebook page, pointing out the "incredible sight".
