Cop Allegedly Put 'Hit' on Town Official

In a February 1, 2009, letter sent to the village mayor, submitted by anonymous members of the Fox Lake Police Department, officers complained about Gliniewicz making threats and sexually harassing a dispatcher; having to be escorted out of bars by bouncers because he was highly intoxicated; stiffing another bar on a $300 tab; taking his family on vacation to Wisconsin in his squad vehicle; grabbing women's breasts at department Christmas parties; and being found repeatedly drunk in public and being belligerent with officers who confronted him.

The unnamed person told police in an interview Gliniewicz made the request for a hit on Marrin in conversation, not over text or other messages, Covelli said.

"Unsettling", she said of the inquiry.

Among their accusations backed up by other records in his personnel file was a report from May 1988 that Gliniewicz was found "passed out" in the driver's seat of his truck on the shoulder of a Fox Lake road, with the engine running and his foot on the gas.

"We have a new village administrator that is a power monger and is trying to control everything in the village", Gliniewicz said, adding that many officers were considering retirement.

"This village administrator hates me and explorer program", he said in another. The detective said he had the truck towed and drove Gliniewicz home himself.

Backup arrived minutes later and found him dead.

Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, known throughout the community as a dedicated officer and mentor to young adults, grew anxious he could face consequences for years of alleged theft from the youth program he ran, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force announced Wednesday.

"My concern is my family".

Jim Pasco, executive director of the National Fraternal Order of Police, the nation's largest police union, said Gliniewicz's actions will not diminish the sacrifices of honorable officers who have lost their lives on the job. Marrin said she did not think her safety was at risk now.

A second official who was briefed on the investigation told the AP that Melodie and D.J. Gliniewicz were recipients of a separate set of incriminating text messages from the lieutenant that investigators released Wednesday when they announced the staged suicide. In another text, Gliniewicz also mentioned the possibility of planting something on Fox Lake Village Administrator Anne Marrin. "This situation right here would give her the means to CRUCIFY Maine (if) it were discovered".

Shortly after she was hired, Marrin began auditing all village programs.

In April 2015, Gliniewicz reached out to a woman via text to help him contact a "high ranking" member of a motorcycle gang, Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesman Christopher Covelli told ABC News Thursday.

Two days later she sent another letter to the chief saying Gliniewicz had intimidated her by bringing a gun into the room where she was working and that given his previous comments she was afraid, upset and angry. Her questions left the elder Gliniewicz feeling he was about to be exposed, authorities say.

"My reaction was doubtful", she said of the suicide.

Covelli said on Thursday he could not confirm or deny reports of Gliniewicz's wife and son being under investigation because the probe was continuing and could lead to prosecutions.

"Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with all those involved during this hard time", the Northeast Illinois Council, which administers the Explorer program, said in a statement.

"There were a lot of red flags", she said.

In one messages that police released, Gliniewicz talked about how much he disliked Marrin.

Marrin emailed Gliniewicz and asked for the inventory list again the morning of September 1. "I believe Mel and the boys had nothing to do with this", Mach said. Back-up officers Gliniewicz had requested found him fatally shot.

But authorities in Fox Lake confirmed this week that Gliniewicz actually committed suicide after reporting a false pursuit of three "suspicious men" - prompting a huge manhunt that turned up empty.
