Bears OC Adam Gase becomes fifth to interview for Dolphins' HC vacancy

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants interviewed Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase for their head coaching job, the fourth person considered for Tom Coughlin's former job.

Gase was the NFL's hottest head coaching candidate among assistants, and the Dolphins announced his hiring Saturday.

Tannehill has shown flashes of brilliance at times during his first four years in the league with the Dolphins, but Miami has failed to make the AFC Playoffs each season despite having a decently constructed NFL roster.

The Browns confirmed they have interviewed candidates in the following order: Gase, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach/offensive line coach Doug Marrone and Henderson.

"This is where we're at right now with Ryan is I've seen him play very minimal games", Gase said.

Philpin was sacked following Miami's loss to the Jets in London and replaced by assistant Dan Campbell.

At 37, Gase would become the league's young coach. He has been a fast-rising coach ever since, and the Dolphins believe Gase is bright enough and talented enough to overcome the obstacles Philbin, Sparano and Cameron could not in Miami.

In Denver, Gase began as a receivers coach in 2009-10 before coaching quarterbacks in 2011-12, and eventually becoming the coordinator in 2013.

Cleveland will reportedly move on with its coaching search by interviewing New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia on Saturday. With the magic Gase was able to work with Cutler in Chicago, he was too good a prospect to get overlooked again.

Said Cutler: "I wish he could stay with us in Chicago...."

"I've been in this profession since I was 18", . "He is ready for this for sure".

He attributed his rise, success, and molding to Nick Saban who took him from Michigan State University to LSU when he took over that job, Mike Martz, and John Fox. Miami is now a step ahead of other teams who will be looking for coordinators after they find a head coach. In 2013, the Broncos scored an NFL-record 606 points fueled by a record 76 touchdowns, all with Gase making the calls.
