Azarenka into quarterfinals at Australian Open

Wawrinka had raised his game, and seemed to have found the key to returning Raonic's serve, forcing break points in the opening game of the fourth before converting one a few games later.

The Swiss ace went 2-0 down but rallied to force a deciding set before Raonic completed a 6-4 6-3 5-7 4-6 6-3 victory to book his spot in the quarter-finals.

Raonic restored stability to his serve in the decider and when he broke for 4-2 after Wawrinka sent a forehand long, there was to be no way back a second time for his 30-year-old opponent.

"It's very painful. I can not even grip anything right now".

Raonic said: 'I've got to always try and dictate, find my way forward and keep him out of rhythm as much as possible'.

In an all-German match, No. 7-seeded Angelique Kerber is playing Annika Beck in the first match on the main Rod Laver Arena. He was approaching the net with great success, winning 68% of his 25 points there, and not allowing Wawrinka the time or space to unload on his huge groundstrokes.

Twice champion and 14th seed Victoria Azarenka continued her ominous advance, beating Czech Barbora Strycova 6-2 6-4. I'm surprised to still have went to five sets.

"I feel like I'm putting in the work and I'm getting the results from it. I'm very happy with that", Raonic said when asked about his confidence after trumping two former Australian Open champions in as many weeks. "You need to be 100 per cent to have a chance to beat him".

Raonic, who earlier spoke of his grief over a high school shooting in his home country, eliminated the Swiss world number four 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-3 and will face in the quarters. "He's playing really good". Wawrinka, who struggled for service consistency, saved one match point at 3-5, Ad Out.

"To be honest, when I woke up I felt quite drained, quite exhausted", he said.

When Raonic broke first for a 5-4 lead today it was his first break of Wawrinka since the first set of their first meeting in the 2012 Cincinnati quarterfinals.

How about this? Into the fourth round in Melbourne for just the second time in his career, John Isner will go on to survive in the bottom half and hit 65 aces in a 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 upset of top-seeded Djokovic in the final.

"For sure it's been a key for those big matches that I won", Wawrinka, still ideal this year after claiming a fourth title in Chennai, told reporters.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - In the darker moments, when the medical needs of his family were becoming more urgent, Andy Murray thought about leaving the Australian Open before the fourth round.

She won the Brisbane International leading into the first major of the season, and dropped only five games in her first three rounds at Melbourne Park. "I'm very happy with the way I played, the way I competed, the way I turned things around after sort of having the momentum against me going into the fifth".

Raonic has refined his net game and showed it with a pair of exquisite backhand volleys for break point. He would maintain that advantage to take the set 6-3.
