Army: Insurgents kill senior Indian army officer in Kashmir

According to Indian media, Colonel Santosh Mahadik, commanding officer of the 41 Rashtriya Rifles, was injured when a search party he was leading came under fire from Kashmiri freedom fighters in the dense forests of Haji Naka along the Line of Control.

An army Colonel was killed and two security personnel injured in an encounter in North Kashmir's Kupwara district, as the operation against a group of militants entered fifth day on Tuesday.

The injured soldiers and policemen were immediately evacuated to Srinagar's 92 Army Base Hospital where Col. Mahadik died soon.

"He had received Sena Medal for exhibiting gallantry and leadership in counter militancy operations, Defence spokesman Colonel N N Joshi said".

One army soldier and SOG personnel were also injured in the ongoing gunfight and they are being treated, they said.

The official further said that more troops have reached the area to ensure that the terrorist do not slip back into the enemy land again and were neutralised in due course of time.

The police official said Colonel Santosh Kumar was leading the operation against the guerrillas from the front when he was injured.

Mahadik left behind his wife and two children aged eleven and five years.
