Williams sets up Sharapova tie

Serena Williams is eager to demonstrate.

Williams and Sharapova both have a rare quality: They are very good against the very best players.

The fifth seed edged Bencic to reach the final eight for another eighth time.

Swiss teen Belinda Bencic believes she is closing in on the world's top players after an epic fourth-round defeat to Maria Sharapova at the Australian Open on Sunday, and is keen for more big matches.

Djokovic hit an unprecedented 100 unforced errors throughout the match - a self-proclaimed record number of mistakes - which spanned a gruelling four hours and 32 minutes before he won 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, reports Xinhua.

Williams has won 17 matches in a row against Sharapova and 18 out of 20 overall, with her last defeat coming 12 years ago in the WTA Championships.

The weight of history Williams accepts works for and against her.

Sharapova later returned fire by commenting on Williams' relationship with her French coach Patrick Mouratoglou, saying: "If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend [Mouratoglou] that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids".

"I love it here in Australia", she said, while raving about Melbourne. "I just want to hear, what did you say?"

"I was down a match point. But I think Serena has the keys".

Sharapova is well known for her solid backhand, but it has the forehand she has been relying on in Melbourne so far, and she put it to good effect again, drilling winners.

"You're always trying to - always trying to improve".

In the minutes after securing her progression to a 10th Australian Open quarterfinal, Serena Williams learned that prolific Grand Slam champion Margaret Court had been watching. "She had a really good match earlier but I've got nothing to lose and will just do my best". The Russian tends to go high risk on all her serves, especially second serves. Eisenbud declined CNN's request. I would give it in the top 10 or top five of my career. For one he said he'd throw caution to the wind in the first set.

That's as near to a tribute as Sharapova is likely to get from her deadly rival. He hit 31 winners, 16 off his strong forehand. I found a sword that looked like He Man's sword. I just love this little... this world.

She is looking for her 22nd major title.

"I have been spending a lot of time learning about myself this trip".

There is no reason to think why this quarter-final match will be any different.

The win secured his spot in the quarterfinals for the 27th consecutive major, equaling Jimmy Connors at No. 2 in that streak and trailing only Roger Federer's record of 36. Friedsam, 21, was in tears after suffering from leg cramps late in the decider.

Nishikori beat Djokovic the last time they met in a grand slam, at the 2014 U.S. Open semi-final, and will need to reproduce that form on Tuesday.

What was Djokovic thinking after the fourth set?

"In tennis, everything can happen, as you know", Mouratoglou said.

Under the roof of RLA for the third time this tournament, the 2008 Open victor showed glimpses of both good and bad. The Spanish player, using a vast array of shots, dominated the last two sets with five service breaks and dropping just one service game. "I have to be the one to dictate".

Djokovic, even with his blip, and Federer are expected to tangle in the semifinals. He awaits sixth-ranked Berdych in the quarterfinals.

The 58-year-old, who was taken to hospital on Saturday after collapsing in the stands in Rod Laver Arena, was discharged on Sunday and allowed to return home to Britain.

Williams eased past the little-known 21-year-old with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. I went to a costume shop the other day.
