Iran says Saudi strike hits embassy in Yemen; no damage seen

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir his country, which cut ties with Iran this past week, would considering taking further measures.

Saudi Arabia's execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr on Saturday has inflamed anger across the Middle East, infuriating Iran.

After the violent protests, Saudi Arabia immediately ended diplomatic ties with Iran, and Qatar joined several other GCC countries in formally condemning the attacks on January 4.

While Riyadh views the Houthis as Iranian proxies working to expand Tehran's influence, the rebels themselves insist that their sole aim is to liberate their nation from a corrupt government.

"The coalition command confirmed that these (Iranian) allegations are false and void, stressing that it does not carry out any operations in the vicinity of the embassy or near it", a statement on the state Saudi news agency SPA said late on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia's deputy crown prince, widely thought to wield considerable power in the monarchy, has given an interview to a magazine in which he says he doesn't believe the kingdom and Iran will go to war.

Nimr al-Nimr, 57, a Shiite cleric from Saudi Arabia's oil-rich Eastern Province, was a well-known figure at anti-government demonstrations and criticized Saudi rulers in some of his sermons for their treatment of the kingdom's Shiite minority.

On Wednesday, Jordan summoned the Iranian ambassador in Amman and condemned the attack on Saudi embassy in Tehran, as well as its rejection of Iran's interference in Arab affairs.

The deputy head of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) told Saudi Arabia on Thursday it would "collapse" in coming years if it kept pursuing what he called its sectarian policies in the region. State media in Iran showed still photographs it said were of the diplomats arriving in Tehran on a Meraj Airlines jet.

The Arab League will hold an emergency meeting on the issue on Sunday, chaired by the UAE.

A protest by hundreds of Bahrain's majority Shiites marching to denounce Saudi Arabia for its execution last week of a leading Shiite cleric has descended into violence.
