Northern Lights forecast for North Wales skies tonight

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, we could reach a geomagnetic storm level of 3, which is considered strong.

The Northern Lights are most likely to be visible in the first 24 hours of the 48-hour storm watch.

The Met Office has said the Northern Lights could dazzle over Britain tonight - just a month after the last sighting of the incredible natural phenomenon over the UK.

This site further provides: NOAA forecasters estimate a 90% chance of geomagnetic storms on November 2nd-3rd when a fast-moving stream of solar wind is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. During the current phase of the solar cycle coronal holes that begin the cycle in the Sun's "polar" regions have now migrated towards the Sun's equator, meaning they are on a similar line of latitude to the Earth (i.e. facing the planet rather than directed north and south out of the solar system).

"During a weak aurora, the colours are very faint and spread out whereas an intense aurora features greater numbers of and brighter colours which can be seen higher in the sky with a distinct arc".

The Met Office advises star gazers to wait until at least half an hour after sunset, go outside away from artificial lights, let their eyes accustom to the dark and look towards the north. "The lights generally extend from 50 miles to as high as 400 miles above the Earth's surface". Due to the strength of this storm, the potential is there for the aurora to be visible as far south as Oklahoma City and Raleigh, N.C. Cloud cover ultimately blocks the view of the lights, so make sure you check the weather forecast or our cloud cover forecast before heading out.

You should find a hill or high spot and a wide open space so you can see the northern horizon where they will be.
